Chapter 17
At halftime, the bleachers thin out. The South Shores Seagulls are winning by ten points. I havenât really paid much attention to the game, still lost in thought over my missed opportunity to question Dane about Romanâs deathâand still angry at Kasper. Iâve watched the coach, though. Itâs hard not to notice him. He stands most of the game, yelling at his own players and pulling them out of the game every time they make a mistake. Except for Evan. Evan stays in the game the entire time, reaching for a water bottle from Molly the minute a time-out is called. Who knew the athletic trainer had to serve as the water girl, too? I get the feeling that Coach Mooreâs players fear him, one guy visibly wincing when Coach Moore slaps him on the back as he takes his seat after being taken out of the game for throwing the basketball out of bounds.
Iâm mildly entertained as Bella dances with the Little Seagulls during the halftime entertainment show. I know which girl is Bella because Officer Trucks holds up his phone and points it in the direction of the awkwardly tall girl at the end of the first row. She stands next to Penny who stands next to Lucy. I hadnât considered that any of my students would be in attendance. Penny is the only child who seems to have mastered the choreography. I scan the crowd to locate their families. I donât feel up to impromptu parent interactions off the clock, so Iâll keep my distance. Itâs a hazard of the job living in the same town you work in.
When the little kids run off the court, I turn my attention to the man in front of me as he scribbles notes on his clipboardânumbers or wordsâI canât tell. He must be a scout. I need to know for sure, so I accidentally on-purpose drop whatâs left of my popcorn over his shoulder and onto his clipboard. âI am so sorry!â
The man turns around, agitated by the interruption in his figurings as the time ticks down on the halftime clock, but as soon as he sees the âclumsy girlâ smiling like a madwoman, he relaxes his shoulders and replaces his scowl with a flirtatious smile that makes my skin crawl. Heâs old enough to be my dad. Kasper owes me so bad. âSorry about that,â I repeat. âWhat are you working on? You seem really into the game,â I smile sweetly. I can play this game if I have to.
âMe? Iâm a scout. I work for a well-known university in Ohio. Weâre all workingâ¦I mean weâre because there are scouts from other schools, too,â he says as he points out other people I hadnât noticed in the crowd who have similar clipboards.
âThatâs so exciting,â I say fakely. âAre there any players youâre particularly interested in? Iâm a big fan of the game.â
âOh yeah? Thatâs cool.â
He lingers his gaze too long on my lips as I scrunch them into a fake smile, and I feel like socking him in the mouth.
